Her husband was with her,but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearlyin shock.

Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what hadhappened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling overin front of everyone.”

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with moremoney. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue(问题) is not alack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot

satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of(由---组成) well-developed and heartycapacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) withthings. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a housewith too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

As more and more people speak the global languages of English,Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. Infact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today willlikely die out by the next century, according to the United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars(学者) from a number oforganizations —UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have formany years been documenting dying languages and the cultures theyreflect(反映).

Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Centre Yale University, whospecializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is followingin that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi withan Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows outof his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.

Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting pointfor Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across theHimalayan reaches of India , Nepal, Bhutan, and China . But he is notsatisfied to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.

At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of importantmaterials—including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.

Now, through the two organizations that he has founded—the DigitalHimalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project—Turin has started acampaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around theworld, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations ofcommunities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks todigital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes(指出), theendangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speechcommunities.

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, oceanexpert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way---by studying movementsof random(随意的) floating(漂浮的) garbage. A scientist with many years’experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heardabout hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwestcoast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were settingup trading fairs(交换集市) to try and match left and right shoes to sell orwear.

Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 intotal — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe

company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the companytold him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a greatexperiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water andtracked(追踪;监测) where they landed, he could learn a lot about thepatterns of ocean currents.

The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas forbeachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as aresult, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer gotto know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information aboutwhere the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve acomputer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish thefindings(研究结果) of their study.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

Learning a language can be a difficult task for some people. Some peopleseem to have a skill for learning languages. They can pick up newvocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new languagemore quickly than others. So what makes language learning so much easierfor them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful languagelearners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make languagelearning easier for them.

First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. Theydo not depend on the book or the teacher merely; they discover their ownway to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, theytry to find the patterns and the rules by themselves. They are good guesserswho look for clues and form their own conclusions. When their guesses arewrong, they guess again. They try to learn from mistakes.

Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successfullearners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such achance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these peopleto correct them when they make a mistake. They will try their best tocommunicate with others. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or tosay something strange;they are willing to make an attempt and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexactor incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the languagethan to know the meaning of every word.

Finally t successful language learners are learners with a purpose. Theywant to learn the language because they are quite interested in the languageand the people who speak it. Others work in foreign countries. It is necessaryfor them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people andto learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularlybecause they want to learn it.LearningSuccessful languageUnsuccessful languagetechniqueslearnerslearners
