My wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of theareas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customized tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of the larger group tours.
The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren’t many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained with stories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she’s in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath.
When we got back to our hotel, Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I’ve already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can’t say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience. 4. What can we infer about Jessie? A. She is a tour advisor. B. She is a tour guide. C. She is a foreign traveler. D. She is a skilled driver.
5. When did the writer visit the Great Wall? A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In autumn. D. In winter. 6. What did the writer think of his tour? A. Adventurous. B. Disappointing.
C. Satisfactory. D. Improvable. 7. What is the probable title for the text? A. A Wonderful Tour Day with Jessie B. An Extraordinary Tour Company C. The Great Wall, an Excellent Attraction D. Jessie, a Kind and Knowledgeable Guide

You’re in a crowd of people who are all asking for the same thing. How do you make your voice heard above the rest? Be different. Don’t shout. Lisa, 25, was waiting to board a plane flying fromLondontoAustriafor Christmaswhen the flight was cancelled.
“There were about a hundred of us unable to leave,” she says. “Everyone else was shouting at the airport staff. Instead of joining in, I walked up to the man behind the ticket desk very quietly and said, ‘This must be so awful for you! I don’t know how you deal with these situations—it’s not even your fault. I could never handle it as well as you are.’ Without my even asking, he found me a seat on another airline with an upgrade to first class. He was happy to do a favor forsomeone who was appreciative instead of unfriendliness.”
Flattery (恭维) is an essential element of the sweet-talk strategy. “It’s human psychology that stroking a person’s ego (自我) with a few well-directed praises makes them want to prove you right,” says apsychologist. “Tell someone they’re pretty and they’ll instantly fix their hair; praise their sense of humor and they’ll tell a joke.”

Allison then went to the woman’s office and explained her problem. “As I was saying to the boss the other day you’re the only person who would know how to handle a situation like this, what would you suggest I do?” “Feeling pumped up (鼓励), she set about helping me and we finished the job on time, and she was happy to help.” Allison said.
8. Whatwould have happened at the airport according to paragraph 1? A. The departure hall was filled with noise. B. Someone screamed just lo be different. C. The passengers waited on board patiently. D. The airport stuff were rude to the passengers.
9. Why did the man put Lisa on another airline?

C. He was ready to help others. D. He was blamed for the cancellation. 10. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The potential benefits of ego. B. The strategy to start small talk. C. The great importance of flattery. D. The value of humor in daily life. 11. What can we learn about Allison’s colleague? A. She was a popular lawyer.

When Jennifer Doudna was in sixth grade, she came home one day to find that her dad had lefta book titled The Double Helix on her bed. She put it aside, thinking it was one of those detective tales she loved.
On a rainy Saturday, she picked up the book. As she sped through the pages, she became fascinated by the drama, which encouraged her to explore nature's wonders. Even though her high school teacher told her that girls didn't become scientists, she decided she would.
She worked with a biologist, Charpentier, to turn a curiosity of nature into an invention—an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as Crispr, the tool will transform the human race. James Watson, the author of The Double Helix, later told her it was the most important biological advance: since he and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA.
For this achievement, Doudna and Charpentier were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. Until now, only five women, beginning with Marie Curie in 1911, had won or shared the Nobel for Chemistry out of 184 award winners. When this year's prize was announced, Dr. Charpentier said it would provide a message specifically to young girls who would like to follow the path of science and to show them that women can also be awarded prizes.
A few decades from now, if it becomes possible and sate to edit DNA, should we allow parents to improve the IQ and physical strength of their kids? Should we let them decide eye color1 ? Skin color1 ? Height? After helping to discover Crispr, Dr. Doudna has become a leader in considering these moral issues. That's the main message we should take from this Nobel: New technologies can be a huge benefit to the human race, but in order to make sure
they are used wisely, it's important for people to understand them. 12. Jennifer Doudna decided to become a scientist because,__________ A. her father pushed her B. a book inspired her
C. her teacher encouraged her D. James Watson motivated her 13. Dr. Doudna was awarded the Nobel Prize because,__________.
A. she wrote the book “The Double Helix\" B. she discovered the structure of DNA C. she is a hardworking woman scientist D. she helped invent a tool for editing DNA 14. According to passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. The two women's success will inspire more girls to be devoted to science. B. Since 1911, there have been 184 people who won the Nobel for chemistry. C. If girls follow the path of science, they will surely achieve their goals. D. Crispr will make a big difference to the human race. 15. Which words can best describe Jennifer Doudna?
