Although the light bulb is not his invention, he is the only one to have made such a successful light bulb. Many people remember him for the invention of the electric light. The coming Sunday was good again according to the weather report, so he called another priest and told him that he lost his voice and was in bed with the fever. He asked him to take over his work.

Some American Indians grew corn, sunflowers, beans, and pumpkins in their gardens. To prepare a garden, they first killed trees. Some Indians put a dead fish into the hole where they planted the corn in order to provide food for the corn plant. The Indians made little progress (进步) during the thousands of years before the Europeans came. One reason for this was that horses, cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens were not found in America. Without horses, the Indians had a hard time digging up the soil, and they could only get animal food by hunting. Another reason for their lack of progress was that they did not know how to use metals to make tools. Stones and flat bones do not make good tools.

Indian hunters would sometimes hunt for days without finding anything. They

learned to follow animal tracks (足迹). They learned to listen. In order to get close to their prey, the Indians had to move quietly. When they were close enough, they could shoot their arrows. Often, the prey got away.

The Mayas were Indians. They were much more civilized (文明的) than American Indians. The Mayas were great builders. They knew how to write down their words, and some of their books still exist.

One day a man found a cocoon (茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly made its great effort to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. But to his surprise, the

th

butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling (爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid (流体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle (拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been; we could never fly. ( ) 31. What was the butterfly doing at the beginning of the story?

A. Struggles are sometimes necessary in our life. B. Nothing is difficult if we put our heart into it. C. Every good deed will come back with good result. D. The greatest happiness in the world is to help others. ( ) 35. What is the best title for the story?

A. The Love for the Cocoon B. The Joy of Helping Each Other C. The Lesson of the Cocoon D. The Expectation for the Butterfly

Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook by yourself? Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the store?

A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of the adults are so lazy that they’d catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs. Just over 2,000 people were quizzed by independent researchers in the Britain’s largest health center. The results were very surprising.

About one in six people who were asked said if their control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.

More than one third of those asked said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of 654 respondents(被调查对象) with children, % said they were often too tired to play with them.

We know that it’s no wonder that one in six children in the UK are very fat before they start school.

Dr Sarah, Dauncey, medical director of the centre, said, “People need to get fitter, not just for their own health, but for their families, friends and pets, too”

“If we don’t start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most basic tasks.”

And Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the laziest city in the UK, with 75% asked thinking they do not get enough exercise, followed by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.

So there are some problems for the National Health Service, where fatness-related(相关的) illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on an increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year. ( ) 36 The underlined word “quizzed” in Paragraph 3 means ______ A. heard B. answered C. listened D. questioned

( )37. Of 654 respondents with children, % said ______.

A. they were often too busy to play with their children.

B. They were often so tired that they couldn’t play with their children. C. They were often so sad that they didn’t want to play with their children. D. They were often ill and they couldn’t play with their children. ( )38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. All the adults in the UK are very lazy.

B. Half of the children are very fat before they go to school. C. Pets will be in trouble if their owners don’t keep healthy.

D. All people in Glasgow feel ashamed because they don’t get enough exercise. ( )39. From the last paragraph, we can learn _____ if they keep lazy. A. people may have heart disease B. people can work at home all the time. C. people like shopping online D. people don’t like climbing the stair ( ) 40. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. The health service in the UK B. A study of British people’s lifestyles C. A study of British people’s laziness D. The fatness problem in the UK.

D

Are people less happy or happier when they get older? If you answer is “happier”, then you are right, based on a study published five years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.

The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

Arthur stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early

seventies.

The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad eperiences. ( ) 41. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Relationship between man and woman. B. Happiness increase with age.

C. Relationship between age and happiness

D. People become more thankful when they are older

( ) 42. When and where did the survey come from? A. In New York in 2008 B. In the Uk in 2008

I can fully understand your situation. In my opinion, you should make good use of your mobile phone. Your parents won't take your phone away if you only use it to make phone calls when necessary. But if you use it to play games or chat with your friends, it will be a waste of time and do harm to your health and your study.

For the problem communicating with your parents, I suggest you should talk to them more often and try to understand their minds. The biggest reason for this problem is that your ways of looking at things are very different. So you should be patient with your parents and never argue with them, or the things will get even worse.

With a little hard work, you can learn to communicate better with your parents. I hope my advice can be helpful to you.

第一节 阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分) A These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year”between their graduation from school and their university studies. This means they can take a year off to do something else, before they start their studies.

For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favorite activity --- and Australia is the favorite place to go.

Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values.

“After a year of travelling, I felt I’d grown up. I had learnt the importance of relationships with people, on all kinds of levels.”

There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects---helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills---decision making and finding answers to problems, for example---that will help many students in a job one day.

Finally, getting some knowledge and experience in an area you hope to study or work in one day will always be very useful.

If several university graduates are applying for the same job, gar year work experience allows you to say,

“ I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can get your job.

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade. I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons go through.

When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism . He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.

Then one day,Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.

After this talk,no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us.

My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson. Now whenever I meet a family with a child who's behaving differently,I always remember what I have learned in my third grade clams and go up to him or her.

You know how much your telephone has changed over the past 10 years? Your car will change even more than that in the next 10 years. One of the biggest changes is that cars will drive themselves.

“We certainly have the technology for it now.”says Andrew Poliak of automotive(机动车辆的)technology supplier QNX.“We expect self-driving cars to be a mainstream thing between 2020 and 2025.”

The American company Google has been working on self-driving cars for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States and are truly self-driving. They have to steering wheels(方向盘)or pedals(踏板). Last week, the police ordered one of Google's cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. The car was not breaking any law, so no one was punished.

Another American company, Tesla, added an “Autopilot” feature to its cars last month. With the Autopilot turned on, the vehicle drives itself. The car will speed up, slow down, brake and drive by itself. You can take over driving any time by turning

the steering wheel or touching a pedal. The car uses sensors to know when driveway changing is safe and whether it should speed up or slow down.

Tesla Autopilot is made for cross-country driving. It keeps you in the driveway and helps you avoid hitting other cars. It does not work well on local roads, for it will not stop at a red light or stop sign.

Reporter Carolyn Nicander Mohr tried the Autopilot feature of a Tesla earlier this month. She had a hard time trusting the car to do what it should do. She thought about disabling the Autopilot feature many times during her trip. She wanted to take control at every bend in the road and hit the brake when the car in front of her slowed down. Yet the car drove perfectly.

Other companies are working on self-driving cars, too. Marcedes-Benz, Audi, BMW.Volvo and Toyota all have plans for such vehicles.

( )36.What do Andrew Poliak's words probably mean?

A. It is too difficult for people to make self-driving cars now. B. Self-driving cars will be first put on the market in 2020. C. There will be more self-driving cars in use in the future. D. Nobody loves to use self-driving cars at the moment. ( )37.Why did the police stop the Google car?

C. It broke the traffic rules D. It had no steering wheel. ( )38.The underlined word “brake” probably means ______.

A. is truly self-driving B. can sense traffic lights C. won't work on freeways D. isn't safe in crowded areas ( )40.From the passage, we can infer that _______.

A. self-driving cars are popular nowadays. B. self-driving could be trusted by anyone.

C. a special driveway should be built for self-driving cars. D. self-driving cars need improving.

User Reviews

What can I say…. I’m a huge Disney fan. Maybe not like my friend over at Reviewing All 54 Disney Animated Films. And More!, the Disney cartoons have been a big part of my life. So, in a sense, the Disney animated features are a big deal to me. Whether young or old, Zootopia’s story carries a powerful and thematic commentary message that’s highly valued and relative (especially in today’s world). As Judy Hopps says in the movie “Life’s a little bit messy. We all make mistakes. No matter what type of animal you are, change starts with you.” And I can’t agree more with

that statement.

( )41. In the film, the animal hosting turns into a ___________ if you live in Sydney.

But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

A. It was crawling around quietly on the ground. B. It was flying among the trees in the forest. C. It was trying to make a cocoon for itself. D. It was struggling to get out of its cocoon.

A. Patient but cruel. B. Careful and wise. C. Kind but unwise. D. Brave and funny. ( ) 34. What does the last paragraph (段落) tell us?

( ) 36 The underlined word “quizzed” in Paragraph 3 means ______ A. heard B. answered C. listened D. questioned ( )37. Of 654 respondents with children, % said ______.

E. All the adults in the UK are very lazy.

F. Half of the children are very fat before they go to school. G. Pets will be in trouble if their owners don’t keep healthy.

Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.

E. Relationship between man and woman. F. Happiness increase with age.

Street levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. H. Women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did. ( ) 44. Why would happiness increase with age?

E. Because old people have no emotion.

F. Because when people get older, they become more beautiful.

G. Because when people get older, they become more thankful and have better

control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

H. Because when people get older, they have no time to think about bad
