There are many factors to the way African-Americans go about their life today. The Civil Rights Movement, popular music, and a sense of wanting complete freedom, all contribute to modern black society. Among them, the Harlem Renaissance is the important source of the African-American culture that we see today.
The Harlem Renaissance stared when millions of African-Americans move north during the early portion of 20th century. This movement was called the Great Migration. When the African-Americans moved north, they moved into neighborhoods where other African-Americans already were. These close-knit communities were a breeding ground for art and literature, because African-Americans were not being oppressed in any way, and they could do anything they wanted to do for a living. Harlem, New York, soon became one of these shelters for culture, thus the Harlem Renaissance began. Because of the Harlem Renaissance, almost anybody with any money, could become an artist. Massive amounts of literature and art were now being produced by the everyday person. Artists such as Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Claude McKay, and Louis Armstrong were becoming internationally recognizable due to their masterpieces. The Harlem Renaissance is considered to be a rebirth of African-American arts. And the United States now sees the African-American community as a serious source of literature, art, and especially music.
Today’s African-American culture is the direct descendant of the Harlem Renaissance. African-American culture will continue to grow with no control on what you can or can not say. The main idea of being free and open about everything regarding life has been passed down through the ages of African-American culture to the music and poetry that we see today.

After his terrible offence, Oliver was locked in a small dark room. He was given even less food and was beaten every day before other boys.
One morning Mr. Gamfield stopped before the workhouse and read the notice which said that anyone who would employ Oliver Twist would be given a reward of 5 pounds.
I must be said that Mr. Gamfield was in a very poor state and that the amount of money he wised to have was just five pounds. And it was also a fine thing to get a boy from the workhouse. These boys were thin enough and could get through any chimney(烟囱).
Mr. Gamfield went into the workhouse.
“You have a bad trade,” said Mr. Limbkins when Mr. Gamfield had said what he wanted. “Little boys are often choked in chimneys,” said another gentleman.
“This is true,” said Mr. Gamfield. “But it doesn’t always happen. You see, boys are always naughty and stop too long in the chimney, so we generally light some straw below. It roasts their feet a little and they come down quickly! But some people burn too much and put water on it. Then it’s all smoke in the chimney and the boy is choked.”
Hearing that, the board then had a meeting where they whispered. At last, Mr. Limbkins said, “We cannot give you the boy.”
Mr. Gamfield slowly walked to the door. “So you won’t let me have him?” said Mr. Gamfield, pausing at the door.
“No,” replied Mr. Limbkins, “As it’s an unpleasant business, we think you ought to take something less than 5 pounds.”
With a quick step, Mr. Gamfield returned to the table... 24. Why was Oliver beaten before other boys? A. As a routine.
B. As a warning.
C. For fun.
D. For comparison.

B. Repair houses through chimneys.
C. Rebuild chimneys. D. Save the boys choked in chimneys.

B. By putting water on the straw. D. By burning some straw below.
C. By beating them fiercely.
27. Why did the board refuse to give Mr. Gamfield the boy? A. Because they wanted a bargain.
B. Because the boy was unwilling to go. D. Because it was an unpleasant business. C

Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about what happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don’t sell? Well, you might be shocked to find out that approximately one third of food produced for human consumption gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy life.
Many people in the UK are trying to do something about this imbalance and make use of thrown-out food that is perfectly edible. For example, there is a cafe in Leeds (UK) whose meals are all created using unsold food from supermarkets. This unwanted food is turned into delicious soups, sauces and curries that feed the hungry people of Leeds. Customers simply pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up.
Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. The supermarket is near Leeds and customers pay whatever they want for the produce. Some low-income families have said that it has changed their lives.
‘Fuel for School’ is another food waste project. Surplus food from supermarkets is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch or snacks.
Some people in the UK practise skipping, which means going to bins and skips and finding food in there to eat. Often the food is packaged, within its use-by date and is perfectly fine to eat!
I lived in Leeds for three years, and have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was all food that supermarkets had thrown away! 32. Why does the author first ask two questions? A. To arouse readers’ interest in the passage. B. To show the advantages of unwanted food. C. To summarize the main idea of Paragraph 1.
D. To raise the awareness of a healthy lifestyle.
33. The underlined part refers to the imbalance between ________. A. food waste and health C. food waste and hunger

Cheerleading is a Sport
The New York Times states that cheerleading s the fastest growing girls’ sport. 36 They fail to distinguish between sideline cheerleaders and competitive ones. Sideline cheerleaders’ main goal is to entertain the crowd and lead them with team cheers, which should not be considered a sport. 37 A sport, as defined, is a “physical activity against an opponent, governed by rules and conditions under which a winner is declared, and primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants.” Because competitive cheerleading follows these guidelines, it is a sport.

Cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as those involved in the more accepted sports. 40 . And it may even appear in the Olympics. A. Competitive cheerleaders work much harder
